Kinesiology & Muscle Testing

A True Hidden Gem…

For me Muscle Testing is an absolute ‘Game Changer’ for most of my clients. Although on the surface it might not seem as scientific as some of the other testing we perform, the science is finally starting to catch up with how and why it works. When we combine this method of testing with our other functional labs we have a truly comprehensive approach to your treatment.

Nutrition Response Testing / Kinesiology / Muscle Testing

Although these are all one of a similar thing there are subtleties that exist between all of them. These exist in the sense of how they are performed and some of the points stimulated and nervous system interactions used. Aside from that the mentioned therapies along with ART (Autonomic Response Testing) have all developed from the practice of Applied Kinesiology. This is a non invasive method of analysing the body in order to determine the underlying causes of ill health. When these are corrected through appropriate natural and nutritional means the body can repair itself in order to attain an optimum level of health. Here at Kyūshi Wellness we incorporate most of the aforementioned practices to obtain the optimum level of testing for each individual.

What is Muscle Testing?

Although below (for anyone interested) I am going to go on and explain the scientific basis to you, this method of assessment and treatment is certainly a case of you have to ‘see it’ or maybe more aptly in this case ‘feel it to believe it’. The reason for this is that firstly it will be very different to anything you have seen or felt before. In addition it is probably rooted from a very different mind set and approach to anything you have been told before (but most things we do at Kyūshi are, we have tried it other ways believe me). To put it as simply as we can Kinesiology Muscle Testing (we will refer to it as muscle testing from now) is done by testing the bodies Autonomic Nervous System (the part of the nervous system that is subconscious and coordinates all of our vital functions from breathing to digesting food etc). By applying pressure to different points of the body we can asses the amount of energy with in parts and organs of the body and also find out what nutritional substances give energy and at the same time find out what stressors (something that places extra stress on the body) take away from the body. By doing this we can get a comprehensive view of what you body is up against and more importantly it really helps with us selecting the right treatments and nutritional plans to restore your health.

  • We basically test what we term a ‘Muscle Lock’. This is where the subconscious nervous system will automatically cause a slight muscle contraction to maintain the length/position of a muscle. Think of it similar to when you go to the Dr and he taps the tendon below the knee with a hammer to check your reflex and the leg kicks. This is very similar in the way it is testing. If the nervous system is working efficiently and has good energy then there will be a good solid ‘muscle lock’. If the Nervous system is not functioning efficiently or If something is draining the body from energy or placing extra stress on the body; then the Muscle lock might not be present. Additionally we might get to an organ where the ‘lock’ disappears because that organ is under significant load and when we add more pressure by slightly reducing blood flow from very light pressure with your hand the lock can disappear. Where people get confused with this testing is that they see it is a strength test when it really couldn’t be any further from this. It is a test of the function of the nervous system and the lighter the touch used the more sensitive the testing becomes (again 'feel it to believe it’ moment). It then becomes slightly different from there as we start to apply light pressure etc to certain areas of the body such as over certain organs. When it comes to this phase we are looking in to what causes a change and it doesn’t necessarily mean that the reflex present is good and not present is bad.

  • As far as the science goes we are looking more at Quantum Physics to explain the inner workings. We are looking at the energetic and/or electromagnetic fields of the body and how these subtle energies interact with the electromagnetic fields of whithin our body. Every single element in the universe contains both physical (Material) and energetic (electromagnetic and informational) properties. In Quantum Physics it is widely accepted that you can’t act on a physical level without acting on the energetic level and vice versa. In terms of applying this to Muscle Testing and the human body we know that every single cell in the body has an electromagnetic field, the groups of these cells will contribute to the electromagnetic field of the organ they are part of, and the organs will contribute to the electromagnetic field of the body. Once we add all of the electromagnetic fields of the body, the elements within the body, and the microorganisms that inhabit the body you then have the Electromagnetic field of the whole organism. If we introduce something inside the electromagnetic field of the organism that is an existing stress or unbalancing to the body than we can have a negative impact on the function of the body and its nervous system. Because the stress of that additional electromagnetic field overwhelms the nervous system. Likewise if we place something that is going to help the body to process that substance or provide the right vitamins, minerals, proteins etc (elements) then this will have a positive effect on the body. Again like everything else we do here at Kyūshi; we are not using this method to diagnose and treat disease. We are finding the areas of ‘dys-ease’ and altered function within the body once we find these and improve them the body tends to take care of the rest.

  • Try this little trick to start to feel for yourself what we are talking about here. Grab something like a bag, a dumbbell, bottle of water etc that you can hold straight out in front of you. It should be a weight that you can hold without over struggling yet it does make you work for it. Before starting to lift the weighted object lets try what else we are going to be doing. Place the palm side of your finger tip (finger print effectively) where the bridge of your nose meets your forehead (just above the centre of your eyes), then roll your finger over so that you touch the same spot with the nail of that finger. Now you know what you are going to do once the weighted object is lifted your ready to go.

First of all with one arm lift the weighted object straight out in front of you with a straight arm so that it reaches shoulder level. From here touch the spot on the bridge of the nose with the palm side of your finger tip. Hold for a few seconds and really tune in to how heavy that weighted object feels and how easy or hard it is for you to hold. Once you have a good perception of the weight; turn the finger tip over so that the nail is touching that same spot. Once again hold for a few seconds to tune in and see how it feels one side of the finger compared to the other. This will be different for everyone but some people will notice a huge difference in how heavy that object felt one side of the finger compared to the other. For others it might be subtlety different. For those of you that found the second side of the finger harder and put that down to fatigue please repeat it the other way around to test it. Repeat the process again but start with the nail side of the finger tip before turning over to the palm side.

So what is happening here? You are over the Electromagnetic field of a very important part of our body called the pineal gland. The pineal gland is responsible for sense of direction and in many birds and animals scientists have evidence to suggest a biological compass exists in this gland. Then It’s simply down to the polarity of the electromagnetic field of your finger. As with any Electromagnetic we have a north and a south pole. When north meets north, or south meets south it will have a repelling affect and this confuses / inhibits your Autonomic Nervous System. When North meets South it attracts and this up-regulates the function of your Autonomic nervous system. You can even do the same experiment again using the north and south pole of a magnetic if you have one to hand. Note: Don’t always expect the same side of your finger or the North or South Pole of the magnet to always inhibit the nervous system function. Your Electromagnetic field does change at times of the day so you may find you do it and one side is easier but then try it a few hours later or days after and it changes to the other way around.
